National land cover data for Marquette County: NLCD data are derived from Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery and have 30-m resolution. The classified image is provided here as a shape-file along with supplementary documentation (including descriptions of the classes used). Original landsat data are held by USGS; this product was created in collaboration with US-EPA and distributed through the Michigan Center for Geographic Information. All pertinent files are included in the zip archive linked here (about 20 Mb).

GLO survey data

The original Government Land Office survey data includes witness tree species, size, and distance recorded at half-mile intervals along all section lines. There are also indications of vegetation type and some sorts of disturbance along these lines. Marquette County survey data date from the 1840s and 1850s. The attached zip file includes GLO data as shape files with associated data-base file; there are also several files explaining abbreviations.

Researchers Ken Hinkel and Fritz Nelson have provided GIS layers in ESRI shape-file format for the Huron Mts. area. These can be provided to researchers on request; please contact Kerry Woods, Director of Research (kwoods@bennington.edu). Available data layers include: elevation contours; lakes; Huron Mt. Club boundary (may not be up to date); named roads; small roads (including driveable tracks within the Huron Mt. Club); and streams.
