Mycorrhizal Fungi of Native Red Pine Stands

Dr. Dana Richter, Michigan Technological University

1996-2006

In eleven years of annual surveys, Dana Richter has documented over 100 species of mycorrhizal fungi  fruiting in the red pine stands of the Huron Mountain Club. Over the course of the study, the number of species observed has fluctuated from as many 56 (in 1997) to as few as 13 (in 2000), and new species have been added almost every year.  This study demonstrates the necessity of long-term observation for full understanding of the composition and dynamics of ecological communities.
